I bought the Kijote as my first gravel bike, and it really got me interested in gravel biking. Out of the box, there was little assembly needed. It did require some adjusting of the brakes and derailleurs, after that it shifted great.
After a few weeks riding it so far I really dig it. Coming from fixed it's so nice to have gears again. It's a bit heavy but it feels rock solid so I don't mind the extra weight. Coming from the Mataro this is a much more comfortable, stable ride. I love my Mataro for speed and flickability, but the Kijote just feels like it can run over everything. I'm enjoying my purchase very much. The brakes are squeaky so I might just buy some better pads.
Only been able to get one ride in so far on my Kijote, but it was a fun ride for sure! This bike fit the bill for what I was looking for. Low entry fee into a drop bar bike to add to the stable, 4130 steel frame/fork, generous tire clearance, and a disk frame/fork that would work with the disk wheelsets I already had on hand. The only issue I had out of the box was entirely personal preference, and it was that the bars felt too narrow and the stem too long. Those issues have since been remedied. I went one size up on the bars and threw on a mtb stem I had laying around that was 30mm shorter than the Aventon unit shipped. Not ever been a huge Shimano fan, but the drivetrain did it’s job well, and I might actually say I like it. Sure, the whole bike needs a few adjustments out of the box, but that’s how it goes. The bike feels nice and solid. No weird creaks, yet anyway. The brakes are ok, and I say that because I haven’t used mechanical brakes for quite some time. Just need to get the feel back I guess. I mean, it’s only $600! That’s a drop in the bucket in the bike world! If you’re on the fence, and looking for this kind of bike, just buy it! You can always upgrade this or that later if you want, but in the meantime you have something you can totally get out and ride. It felt comfortable, it didn’t really show it’s weight(for me, anyway), it liked to be on some singletrack as well as pavement, and everything worked as it should. Completely happy with this purchase. Aventon’s customer service is excellent as well!
The back hub came a little vertically out of alignment but that can be expected from shipment. My local bike shop basically said just ride it out. Regardless I have since put this gravel bike to the test and it's amazing. Started with an easy asphalt trail ride into a swampy off road trail on to a road ride home and it handled it all with ease. I love this bike.
